Warmth from their kitchens and their souls
I tripped across SPINNING PLATES at the Santa Barbara Film Festival
earlier this year and immediately fell in love with this terrific
documentary. As someone that watches food shows on cable, this movie
does what most of what I routinely see on TV never does, it delves
deeply into the passionate reasons why people who cook for a living keep
doing it. All three establishments, as disparate as they are, show us
how it doesn't matter if you're at a high-end place like Alinea or La
Cocina de Gaby in Tucson, Arizona, when the food arrives at your table
it's been made by someone who loved making it more than you'll love
eating it. Even the uninitiated know that the restaurant business is
riddled with more failure than success, so to see three different tales
showing all sides of running an eatery is fascinating. To see that no
matter the outcome, either stunning success or heart wrenching failure,
doesn't have anything to do with the passion of those that would run a
restaurant is comforting. I'm sure Mr. Rapold's take on this movie is
tinged with years of cynicism and perhaps boredom at being paid to watch
movies, but for those of us that go out of our way to see a movie,
especially a movie about something as universally loved as food, we are
soothed to know that our passion for a delicious, well made meal is
mirrored by those that would cook one for us. This lovely film
confirmed that for me, in a simply told and beautiful way. That's why I
leave my house and buy a ticket, so to the filmmakers I say "mission
accomplished" and thanks.

Joseph Levy’s ordinary
documentary “Spinning Plates” rotates among the challenges faced by the
proprietors of three restaurants: the 150-year-old Breitbach’s Country
Dining, in Balltown, Iowa; a struggling roadside Mexican joint in
Tucson; and the chef Grant Achatz’s Alinea in Chicago, which has three
Michelin stars. While a lot could be said about each, and about food and
culture generally, this dully structured film makes its points early
and often, treading water before a purposely delayed big finish. —
