The group’s competition is founded on intensive practice and
forethought; though the filming of singing is akin to filming actors speaking, the filming
of dance is a thing unto itself, and the filmmaker these days who blends a fascination with
process to an obsession with choreography (two things this movie needs a lot more of) is
Steven Soderbergh. And if there’s one filmmaker these days who does, sublimely, romanticize
the outlier, it’s Gus Van Sant, who knows from the liberating imaginative power of masks
(see “Restless”), and he’d have found far more pathos in the groups’ imperfect fusion of
temperaments and the students’ search for identities.
And where’s Peyton Reed when you need him? His first feature, of course, was “Bring It On,” and he did film—in “The Break-Up”—an exemplary a-cappella scene, at a family dinner, that’s centered on a superb turn by John Michael Higgins (who’s also in “Pitch Perfect”). That wondrous comic scene, which nonetheless gives that painful melodrama—Douglas Sirk for teen-agers—a sharp plot kick, is a piece-by-piece deconstruction in reverse of a-cappella practice. What Reed achieves in that scene is what’s missing from “Free Download Pitch Perfect (2012) movies”: a sense of process, of discovery, of becoming. And what he gets his actors to deliver in that movie is something that the wonderful cast of “Pitch Perfect” isn’t given the chance to achieve: working in the framework and tone of comedy and actually being funny and genial, they get deep into character and evoke powerful emotion.
Forget “Glee”; spontaneous ensemble singing has given a strong sentimental kick to movies ever since sound recording came in. Take Howard Hawks’s 1930 harsh and unstinting war movie “The Dawn Patrol,” which I’ve described as a “virtual war musical,” featuring pilots in the common room breaking into song, or his 1941 comedy “Ball of Fire,” in which an old song, “Genevieve,” poignantly conjures whole lost lives. What “Pitch Perfect” lacks is simplicity; it brings together actors who are good to see and good to watch (and, in the very few free moments it gives them—as in a briefly lingering closeup of Snow, near the end, during an outdoor rehearsal by the group—true feeling arises) but hardly gives them a chance to do what they can or to be what they are.

One of the surprising merits of “Pitch Perfect” is its cinematography, by Julio Macat, who doesn’t let things get too bright; he works with shadow and lets the actors fall into it. The palette isn’t candy-bright but collegiate-rumpled and tossed-together, and the styles aren’t an utter embarrassment; they err on the side of the nondescript. It’s a sensible production that lacks the galvanizing spark of a filmmaker’s distinctive vision. The movie isn’t a botch; it’s a tease. It brings together a superb cast and, boiling their roles down to a schematic essence and filming them with an undistinguished, indistinct, and overly busy blandness, lets the actors do all the work. They do it well, but their exertions deserve better attention.
Storyline: The Barden Bellas are a collegiate, all-girls a cappella singing group thriving
on female pop songs and their perfect looks. After a disastrous failing at last year's
finals, they are forced to regroup. Among the new recruits is freshman Beca, an independent,
aspiring DJ with no interest in the college life. But after she meets Jesse, from the rival
all-male a cappella group, Beca has a new outlook and takes it upon herself to help the
Bellas find their new look and sound and get back into the competition...
Beca (Anna Kendrick) is that girl who'd rather listen to what's coming out of her headphones than what's coming out of you. Arriving at her new college, she finds herself not right for any clique but somehow is muscled into one that she never would have picked on her own: alongside mean girls, sweet girls and weird girls whose only thing in common is how good they sound when they sing together, in the new out-loud comedy 'Free Download Pitch Perfect (2012) movies.
When Beca takes this acoustic singing group out of their world of traditional arrangements and perfect harmonies into all-new mash-ups, they fight to climb their way to the top of the cutthroat world of college a cappella. This could wind up either the coolest thing they'll ever do or the most insane, and it will probably be a little of both.
Loaded with new takes on old favorites to hits of right now that are seamlessly mixed together, mashed-up and arranged like you've never heard before, 'Free Download Pitch Perfect (2012) movies' is directed by Jason Moore, who opened our eyes to the very misbehaved life of puppets in the surprise Broadway sensation Avenue Q.
